In the mid-13th century, Dominicans settled in Aarhus. They took over the former cathedral of St. Nicolai and converted it into a monastery. The present north wall of the nave is the oldest part of the building. It was built from the travertine of the previous building. Around 1250 the choir was expanded in Romanesque style, the nave was built in Gothic style around 1350, the aisle around 1450 and the tower around 1500.
