Dating back to the late 11th century, teh castle has a long, rich history. In 1117, when Queen Urraca was surrounded in this castle by supporters of her son, the boy-king Alfonso VII, she managed to escape to Santiago de Compostela in search of the aid of Archbishop Gelmírez. Legend has it that she fled through the underground passageway that connected the castle to the banks of the Tea.
The castle tour can be done in an an hour or so. Check hours, they do siesta here...

Impressive castle restored in the s. 20th It can be visited from Mon-Fri, from its reopening to the public in 2021.
