Here are samples of thirteen different stones that were used in the construction of Grand Central Station in New York at the beginning of the 20th century. The small pillars were set up to study the effects of the elements and the New York winter. Two were then selected for construction. More interesting information can be found on a board on site. In 1905, these stone samples were placed here to assess their resistance to the New York weather. These are the same materials used in the construction of Grand Central Station between 1903 and 1913.
