In 1789-91 the people of Klein-Aupa built their village church, got a church administration and a school (through Emperor Joseph II) (although at the same time he dissolved many monasteries throughout the country) because, according to legend, they betrayed a secret to him (that they earned part of their income through smuggling). The church is dedicated to Peter and Paul.

The road stretches uphill to the historic centre of Malá Úpa, with its church, parish and school. Cattle were kept in the imperial forests until forest grazing was banned in 1866, after which they stayed in the stables for most of the year and were fed with hay from the meadows. Towards the end of the 19th century, 1,000 cows were kept in Malá Úpa alone (550 in 1945, but cattle breeding died out after the forced resettlement). The huts are scattered across the slopes.
