The Widukind spring miracle is said to have happened in Bergkirchen. When the Saxon duke Widukind, marked by war and already tottering in his pagan beliefs, rode through the Wiehen Mountains, he put the Frankish god to the test. With his power he should shoot spring water out of the rocky ground. And indeed: when Widukind's steed stepped on its hoof, it uncovered a spring from which Widukind could drink. According to legend, the spring miracle is the decisive reason for his conversion to Christianity. However, Bergkirchen is only one possible location for the spring miracle.
