The church village is located about 16 kilometers northwest of Coburg on the Langen Bergen and is laid out as a clustered village with a Gewannflur. The district border in the north corresponds to the state border with Thuringia. The Ortsbach, a source stream of the Habergrund that flows to the Werra, crosses the village. The district road CO 4 connects Grattstadt with Bad Rodach and Meeder.

Burial graves on the Long Mountains bear witness to early settlement. The first documented mention of Grazzestat comes from the year 815, when the nobleman Erlwin donated his possessions in Grattstadt to the Fulda monastery.[3] From the 14th century onwards, the Veßra monastery owned nine farms in the town. From 1305 at the latest, Grattstadt was under the control of the Hennebergers. In 1353 the place with the Coburg Land came to the Wettins by inheritance and was therefore part of the Electorate of Saxony from 1485, from which the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg later emerged.
