Legend has it that the Queen of the Dolomites and her entourage found refuge with the marmots on the high plateau of the Fanes, where they are still waiting today for their redemption. According to legend, they fled from a king full of falsehood, a "Fausto rego" as the Ladien say. This greedy ruler betrayed his empire and abandoned it to ruin.

The Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park covers an area of 25,453 hectares and extends to the municipalities of Abtei, Braies, Toblach, Wengen, Enneberg and Olang. The mountain slopes facing the Pustertal form the northern border of the park, in the west the wooded slopes delimit it from the Gadertal, in the south it extends to the national border, the eastern border to the Sexten Dolomites is given by the Höhlensteintal.
