The village of Keldur south of the Hekla volcano is best known for its peat-roofed houses and has therefore been proposed by Iceland for inclusion as a world heritage site. The current church was built in 1875. The foundations of the houses date back to the 11th century, making them the oldest in Iceland.

In Keldur, one of Iceland's oldest settlements, stands this small church surrounded by turf houses. The current wooden building dates back to 1875, but the place has much deeper roots: Oddi the Strong, a character from the Icelandic sagas, lived here. The simple, white church contrasts with the grass and hills, recalling the faith and rural life of centuries past. A historic spot where the sagas seem to continue whispering in the wind.
