On the slope of the Domberg, between the city wall and the lower town, there is an open, garden-like area, which according to legend is the birthplace of the Danish flag. It is the garden of the Danish king, as King Valdemar II of Denmark allegedly pitched the camp here with his troops before he conquered the Domberg (Toompea) in 1219. A well-known legend in Estonia and Denmark claims that the Danish flag, the Dannebrog, was born here.
