A few centuries B.C. A settlement arose around today's Tsjerkebuorren street in the 4th century BC. The first documented mention of the town dates back to 1132, when the place was called Denningrip. When a canal between Leeuwarden and Harlingen was completed in 1507, another settlement arose near Tsjerkebuorren. Between 1850 and 1950, these two settlements gradually grew together into one place.

The town's famous sons include the astronomer Eise Eisinga (1744–1828) and the painter Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836–1912).
