A first church was built in the 8th century, but was replaced by a new Romanesque building in the 11th century. In the 15th century the choir was added and four chapels were rebuilt. Also in the 15th century, Hagen preachers from the Netherlands came to preach Protestantism in Hasselt, then a period of iconclasm followed. Maaseik Hasselt temporarily declared the separation of the church. During this time he destroyed the tabernacle, statues, side altar and main altar under the command of Gerard van Groesbeek.

The St. Quintinus Cathedral, dedicated to Quintinus, is located in the center of Hasselt. The St. Quintinus Church became a cathedral upon the establishment of the diocese of Hasselt in 1967. Until then, the inhabitants of the province of Limburg were members of the diocese of Liège. It is also the parish church of the Sint-Quintinus parish.
