The architect Hermann Eggert was looking for a very direct architectural reference to the nearby cathedral when he designed the war memorial erected in 1877. But instead of a finial, the stone spire of the monument bears the replicas of an imperial crown and a sphaira, i.e. the imperial orb, placed on it. Going back to ancient ideas, its spherical shape symbolizes the world and the cosmos that surrounds it. The seven signs of the cross that she bears (six crossed ribbons on the surface, one above) establish the Christian reference.
