While the Jansenius Tower on the right bank of the Dijle (across the bridge) is named after an illustrious resident, Cornelius Jansenius, the Justus Lipsius Tower has nothing to do with Justus Lipsius. It received that name much later, in 1860, when the university purchased the former Ursuline Convent and converted it into the Justus Lipsius College.

The tower previously stood on the grounds of the Ursuline Convent, which was banned by the French in 1798. It formed the very tip of a plot of land purchased by the Order of Saint Ursula in 1659.

The Justus Lipsius Tower was one of the towers flanking the water gate. This was the gate through which the Dyle entered the city and which could be closed by a fence. On the other side of the Dyle is the other tower of the water gate, the Janseniustoren. Since 2017, both towers have been accessible via the new Jansenius Park. Fortunately, restoration works have started to save the tower from further collapsing.
