Selbitz had been owned by the Burgraves of Nuremberg since 1388, who often passed the place on as a fiefdom. The later office of the Prussian Principality of Bayreuth, which had been in power since 1792, was granted market rights on May 16, 1783. Selbitz had important magistrate rights. The market town fell to France in the Peace of Tilsit in 1807 and became part of Bavaria in 1810. As part of the administrative reforms in Bavaria, today's municipality was created with the municipal edict of 1818. On October 26, 1954, the Selbitz market was given the name city.
