Since 2018, the entrance fee to the castle has increased from 25 to 70 kuna🤔

The fortress is a symbol of an exceptionally important and turbulent past of this city. Very well-preserved condition and excellent picturesque location make it one of the most beautiful city-fortresses on the Croatian coast.

From the proceeds of the salt trade, the fortress Spanjola was begun in 1282 under Venetian government. In 1571, the Turks invaded the city and plundered. The population found shelter in the fortress. But in a few years later, the lightning struck the building and severe damage to the fortress was the result. The fortress was repeatedly expanded and served as a barracks. In 1971, extensive measures were taken to maintain the facility.
