"People's needs instead of luxury needs" - that was the social reform credo of the Swiss architect and second Bauhaus director Hannes Meyer. With the arcaded access houses (1929-30) he implemented his claim to place social issues at the center of architecture and work at the Bauhaus in an exemplary manner. The system is the first joint work of the Bauhaus building department, which was created under the direction of Hannes Meyer. Since 2017, the arcaded houses have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage.

In 1929, multi-storey houses with an outside arcade were built, from which the apartment doors can be reached. Hannes Mayer, successor of the Bauhaus director Gropius, built the 48m² small apartments according to the slogan "Demand instead of luxury needs".

From 1929 to 1930, the district of Törten was expanded by five residential buildings. Responsible for this was Hannes Meyer and the construction department of the Bauhaus. The so-called arcade houses supplemented the previously completed row house settlement by Walter Gropius with over 300 apartments and the building of the consumer association.
The arcaded houses were built according to Meyer's motto "People's needs instead of luxury needs". The space-saving units were mainly rented to workers.
