The “Tour Carbonnière” was formerly used as a watchtower and defense tower for the only road that then connected the mainland with Aigues-Mortes, which in the 13th century was still situated on a difficult-to-access lagoon.

The tower was first mentioned in 1346. At that time, it protected the only access to Aigues-Mortes through the swamp. Tolls were also collected here.
