    On March 6, 1944 Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress 42-37886 'Blitzing Betsy' of USAAF 388 Bomb Group 562 Bomb Squadron came down in the peat nearby. The aircraft participates in its first major air raid on Berlin. On the way back to Honington, the bombers are met by German fighters over Southeast Drenthe. The Luftwaffe shoots down four planes. The blazing Blitzing Betsy crashes into the formation's command aircraft, B-17G Flying Fortress 42-40054, which lands on Schoonebekerveld. Four crew members are killed, six are arrested by the Wehrmacht. There were no civilian casualties or damage caused by the crash.     From the vantage point you have a beautiful view over the vast peat area. Many large boulders were found in the peat boulders, which were pushed here from Scandinavia by the large ice packs in the Saale Ice Age. Some of those boulders are gathered here. For some, the origin is stated on shields affixed to the stone. (Source: ANWB)
