The church was built between 900 and 1100 in Romanesque style. The massive fieldstone church has walls up to 2 meters thick. During the Battle of the Nations, the Swedish Crown Prince Bernadotte used the church as an observation site. The events of 1813 are reminiscent of three French cannonballs set in the church tower.

The Romanesque castle church dates from the 12th century. It was the parish church of the three Parthian villages Neutzsch, Cleuden and Plösen, which merged in 1889 and named the place Thekla after their church.
Decayed at the time of the Thirty Years' War, the renovation could not be completed until 1660. Three French cannon balls walled into the church tower are a reminder of the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig.
