The shepherd's beech is a hornbeam. However, the hornbeam does not belong to the beech family, but belongs to the birch family. The name "Schäferbuche" reveals that earlier (in the 19th century) there was no forest here, but meadows and pastures. Only a few trees were not cut down, as they served the grazing animals and the shepherd as protection from the sun and rain.
The Schäferbuche is one of the oldest trees that can be found here in the vicinity of the Scharzfels castle ruins.

It's amazing how big this tree is - at the time of our visit (October 2020) it looked a bit bleak, the last time we visited four years ago it looked different ...
