In French, the "Forêt des Ducs" is what remains of the immense Ardennes forest that covered the region at the time of the conquest of Gaul by Julius Caesar. Mainly composed of beeches and oaks, this predominance is native to the hand of man: the beech forest met the enormous demand for fuel from the forges in the region.

The area around Eupen is a unique natural landscape. The Hertogen Forest south of Eupen is considered the gateway to the Hohes Venn nature reserve. With its 12,300 ha, the Hertogenwald is one of the largest closed high forest areas in the Ardennes.
