For decades the Hasentisch was hidden in Höllental - the local history association Abterode woke the cultural monument from its slumber. Because the imposing table and its row of seats made of gypsum stone was hidden behind meter-high undergrowth of elder, maple, birch, blackberry and sloe.
It took three days of work to uncover the stone seating area where miners from the nearby Gustav mine once spent their breaks.

The name "Hasentisch" comes from a legend that is localized around the Meißner district of Abterode. "Hasentisch" is the name of an old table, which also includes a row of seats made of gypsum-containing stone. The origin of the legend goes back to a priest who told the children playing in the Höllental that the rabbits played skat at this table. The name of the priest, the time of his work and the origin of his knowledge are unknown.
