Spike Island was a harsh Cromwellian Prison in the 1650s, thousands of inmates where basically marooned on the island with no food, shelter or beds.
By 1847 the next prison was built, this was the largest prison in the world at the time and remains the largest prison in Briton or Ireland.
Between 1985 and 2004 this was a modern prison holding civilian prisoners.
