The Puerta del Puente is one of the gates of the Roman wall that protected Córdoba. Although its appearance has been completely renovated throughout history, its location at the north end of the Roman Bridge has remained intact.

Devotion to the archangel originated in the 17th century, during a strong plague epidemic in Córdoba. According to tradition, Saint Rafael appeared in a dream to Father Andrés de las Roelas and transmitted a message to him: he would save the city from the epidemic. When the plague began to subside, the archangel's apparitions spread throughout the city, and from then on, San Rafael was named Eternal Custodian of Córdoba.
