The village square, known as Dorpstraat before 1977, ending east on the Vaddenhoek, with mainly yellow-painted buildings, was cobbled in 1994. Almost intact, with St. Hilarius Church, the walled parsonage located in a valley, the walled motte where the so-called "Klein Kasteelke" used to be. " stood, rural houses, some small farms, a village inn; also a wide ornate cast iron entrance gate leading to the so-called "Den Ast Castle" of the Baroness de Gerlache de Gomery, in the Huise territory.

Even today, the village of Mullem, a sub-municipality of Oudenaarde, remains a picture. The village center is classified and consists of the Romanesque Saint Hilary Church with walled cemetery, a presbytery and an old municipal school. On top of the steep Aststraat stands the castle de Gerlache, a French-style residence inhabited by the descendants of the Antarctic explorers Adrien and Gaston de Gerlache. Many houses and farms here are still painted in ocher yellow, a reminder of their former dependence on the castle.

Located between rolling hills and still virtually untouched, Mullem is rightly included in the select list of 'most beautiful villages in Flanders'. Just about all the houses, but also barns and fence walls, the café and the schoolmaster's house are painted ocher yellow, the color that the local lord of the castle wears in his coat of arms.
