As Saumseen several adjacent lakes in the nature reserve "Fritschlach" are called. They were created by the former clay mining. The extracted clay was used for the construction of half-timbered houses.

As part of a former loop of the Rhine, the NSG Fritschlach encompasses the Saumsee and parts of the Alter Federbach river. In the north of the Fritschlach, clays and loams were extracted from the silted loop as building material for the half-timbered houses: This is how the so-called Saumseen were created. The lakes in the center of the Rhine arc, on the other hand, are more recent; gravel and sand were dredged here to build bunkers during the Second World War.
