In the 19th century, the Rhinplate was a natural sandbank formed by the Elbe river, which lay in front of the entrance to the port of Glückstadt. The expansion of the Elbe and the associated construction of a guide dam around fifty years ago gave the approximately five-kilometer-long island its current shape. The original sandbank is now almost completely overgrown with reeds or even a floodplain forest, so that the view of the main shipping channel of the Elbe is blocked from Glückstadt. The entire island is still flooded at times.

If you look north from here, you can occasionally see one of the large container ships or even a cruise ship entering or leaving the port at the confluence of the Glückstadt branch of the Elbe and the main shipping channel to the port of Hamburg.
