The fortified hill 296.6 towering over the north-west part of Częstochowa was one of the key defense points of the "North" section in the "Częstochowa" position, also known as the Częstochowa redoubt. In addition, the hill was also an excellent vantage point for Polish artillery observers, with a view stretching as far as Lgotha and Libidza. The possible conquest of the hill could therefore give the Germans a perfect insight into the center of the Polish grouping and, consequently, the possibility of breaking the first line of defense of the 27th Infantry Regiment.
