The small village of Escomb, on the banks of the River Wear, is notable for its famous Saxon Church, which has been cited as being 'England's earliest complete church.' It was built in the 7th or 8th century and has been restored numerous times through the centuries.

Just by the village green is the Saxon Inn, an 18th-century establishment that serves good food and boasts 11 en-suite rooms. It's the perfect place to relax after a walk in the Durham countryside.

Escomb church is at the bottom of a steep decent and it has to be ridden or walked back up. The church is worth a visit and the key is kept on a hook at 28 Saxon Green. Just return it after looking around the church. There is a hostelry nearby for refreshments before ascending the hill again
