It was designed by the Valencian architect Santiago Calatrava and together with the Rialto Bridge, the Barefoot Bridge, and the Accademia Bridge are the only ones that cross the Canal Grande in Venice. This bridge was the first to be built in Venice in 125 years in this city. It consists of a single metal arch and has a total length of 94 meters. The width at the ends is 5.58 m and 9.38 m in the center. The maximum height of the bridge in the center of the canal is 9.28 m.

The Ponte della Costituzione, or Glass Bridge, is the fourth bridge over the Grand Canal and was opened on September 11, 2008.
It connects Piazzale Roma, the central hub in the northwest of the city, with the train station. Some of the glass steps can be dangerous when it rains.
Update: Most of the glass panels have since been replaced.
