The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption (Santander) is located very close to the sea and its appearance is very austere if we compare it with others of the time.

The history of the cathedral dates back to the times when Santander was granted the status of jurisdiction in 1187, under the tutelage of the abbot of its church, this meant a great economic boost for the town with which the cathedral could be built and the castle, which was later called Puebla Vieja, as well as walls that defended the busy port and its inhabitants.

The patronage "Mary (or in other spelling:) Assumption of the Virgin Mary" of the Cathedral of Santander refers to one of the many commemoration or feast days in honor of the Blessed Mother Mary. It goes back to the feast of her bodily assumption into heaven, which the Church celebrates annually on August 15.
In many rural areas it is customary for the population to collect bundles of herbs on this day and to bless them in the festival service.

Diğer şeylerin yanı sıra, Santander Katedrali'nde Aziz Emeterius ve Aziz Celedonis'in kalıntıları görülebilir. Koruyucu azizlerin bir türbesini temsil ederler. Kilise, misafirleri için her gün açıktır.
