Marc Chagall was approached by Pastor Peter Vogelsanger in 1967 to design the windows of the Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) after a design competition involving Swiss artists had failed. His initial drafts of the stained-glass windows for the Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem, exhibited in Zurich in 1967, had caught Vogelsanger's attention. For Chagall, the Frauenkirche was love at first sight. Just six months later, the artist was already at work in Zurich. The world-famous painter received a mere 150,000 Swiss francs for his work, donated by the construction entrepreneurs Lou and Heinrich Hatt-Bucher.

It wasn't until he was 70 years old that Chagall discovered stained glass. The windows in a synagogue in Jerusalem were already world-famous when the pastor of the Fraumünster Church dared to contact Chagall in 1967. The result is a unique, highly spiritual work of art of immense color and expressive power. The windows were inaugurated by the 83-year-old Chagall in 1970.
