The Red Tower stands on a hill. It is part of the city's fortifications from the 13th century. The five-storey tower - the top storey is built in half-timbering - housed the town piper's apartment. From here he could overlook the entire city and was responsible for raising the alarm in the event of fire.

The Red Tower is one of the oldest buildings in Kulmbach and dates back to around 1300. Built in the city moat and in front of the city wall, this had the advantage that there was a blind spot and an enemy who had penetrated into the moat could be fought more easily with projectiles. After the invention of the cannon, the Red Tower lost its military importance. However, with a total height of 27 m and an eaves height of 18.40 m, it was ideally suited as an observation post for the municipal fire warden.
