Every year, Überlingen's city gardeners must plant out the frost-sensitive cacti before the onset of winter and overwinter them in a greenhouse. In the spring, after the Ice Saints, the plants are then replanted in their large outdoor beds.
As part of the 2021 State Garden Show, a greenhouse was built where the cacti can be viewed year-round, starting in winter.

It will be the last few days that these cacti can be seen here. Every year in winter, the around 5000 exhibits, some up to 100 years old, 6-7 m high and weighing up to 300 kg, are put into a greenhouse for wintering and rebuilt here the following year. From 2022 the cactus collection will find its new home in the newly built plant house in the villa gardens, where they can be admired all year round. At the location in the city garden, hardy cacti and succulents will take their place.
