    Yürüyüş

This mythical staircase has 374 steps. If you're in Liège, you have to climb them - or descend them, for the lazy - at least once!

I advise you to come the first Saturday of October. The Cité ardente bears its name particularly well and shines with a thousand lights during the annual event of the Nocturnes des Coteaux de la Citadelle. The stairs are then decorated with thousands of candles.

What are the key historical landmarks to explore at the top of Montagne de Bueren?

Beyond the panoramic views, the summit of Montagne de Bueren offers access to the remains of the old citadel. You'll also find a war memorial dedicated to soldiers who died in World War I and World War II, providing a poignant historical context to your visit.

Are there any specific walking routes or circular walks that incorporate Montagne de Bueren?

Yes, Montagne de Bueren is often a highlight within longer walking routes through Liège's historic upper town. While the stairs themselves are a direct ascent, you can combine them with explorations of the surrounding ancient streets and hidden passageways, or take a separate walking path through the woods to the top for a different experience. Many hikers enjoy creating a circular route by ascending the stairs and descending via the wooded paths or exploring the citadel area before returning to the city center.

Is Montagne de Bueren suitable for a winter climb, and what should I wear?

Montagne de Bueren is open year-round, making a winter climb possible. However, the 374 steps can become slippery with ice or snow, so extreme caution is advised. For a winter visit, wear sturdy, non-slip footwear and dress in warm layers. The views can be particularly crisp on a clear winter day.

How long does it typically take to climb Montagne de Bueren?

The time it takes to climb Montagne de Bueren varies depending on your fitness level and how often you pause to admire the views or rest. For most visitors, a steady ascent can take anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes. This doesn't include time spent exploring the citadel or viewpoints at the top.

    Is Montagne de Bueren dog-friendly?

Yes, Montagne de Bueren is generally dog-friendly. Many locals and visitors climb the stairs with their dogs. However, due to the steepness and numerous steps, ensure your dog is comfortable with such an ascent. Keep your dog on a leash, especially during busy times, and be mindful of other visitors.

What public transport options are available to reach Montagne de Bueren?

Montagne de Bueren is centrally located in Liège and easily accessible by public transport. You can take various bus lines to stops within walking distance of the staircase's base. Is Montagne de Bueren wheelchair accessible?

Due to its design as a steep staircase with 374 steps, Montagne de Bueren is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible. The incline and lack of ramps make it unsuitable for wheelchairs or strollers. However, the panoramic views from the top can be accessed by car or alternative routes to the citadel area.

What unique events or illuminations take place at Montagne de Bueren?

Montagne de Bueren is known for special events that transform its appearance. What is the historical significance of the name 'Montagne de Bueren'?

The staircase is named after Vincent de Bueren, a 15th-century nobleman who played a crucial role in defending Liège against an attack by Charles the Bold, the Duke of Burgundy. It was built in 1881 not only to connect the citadel to the city but also to honor the 600 soldiers who died in that historic battle.
