The RWE industrial monument Koepchenwerk on Hengsteysee is a fascinating pumped storage power plant from the 1920s. Visitors can explore the history and operation of the power plant in the visitor center and then use the surrounding hiking and biking trails. The sight of the well-preserved industrial monument and the view of Lake Hengstey make the visit a worthwhile excursion for those interested in technology and nature.

The Koepchenwerk was the first German pumped storage plant to go into operation in January 1930. It was decommissioned in 1994 and replaced by a modern power station using the same pumped storage at the top of the mountain.

You can get a better view of the complex from the other side of Lake Hengstey - you can experience the listed ensemble more directly here.
