The village of Hoek van Holland, as a sub-municipality of Rotterdam also known as 'Rotterdam aan Zee', was only created during the construction of the Nieuwe Waterweg. The site of the current 'Zuidelijk Strandcentrum' used to be the barracks of the earthworkers who did the excavation work for the canal. After its completion in 1872, they continued to live in their original camp and found work in horticulture or provided the heavy, unskilled labor in building the harbour.

It is located in South Holland at the main estuary of the Rhine. This stream section of the Rhine is here called Oude Maas for reasons of river history.
