The Desert Chapel from the sixteenth century is one of the most picturesque corners of the Pajottenland. the name Desert would come from "wastenij", which would have indicated the uninhabited character of the place. Until a hundred years ago, only cattle were grazing there. The Chapel of St. Cross was built for a copper cross that is said to have been found on this site and which returned to its place on the Desert on its own from the parish church at night.

The Desert Chapel, a historic chapel of the Holy Cross, is located on the former pilgrimage route to Compostela.
Parts of the chapel's current construction date from the 14th and 15th centuries, but the current chapel was built in 1600.
The name “Woestijn” comes from “wastijn”, an undeveloped wasteland as this region looked like at the time.
