Sit, see and be seen, chill! The Roman columns don't really belong here, but they look very decorative in the ambience.
Behind the doll fountain there is a pretty triangular square, surrounded by beautiful gabled houses from different architectural periods, the so-called courtyard, which used to be called Döppemarkt (Döppe = earthen pot).
An eye-catcher is the Roman "portico", it was probably part of a promenade that surrounded a temple district within the Roman baths.

The courtyard is referred to as the nucleus of Aachen, as traces of the oldest Roman buildings from the time around the birth of Christ can be found here. Remains of the Quirinus spring were found here. It was the first artificially enclosed thermal spring of the Romans in Aachen.
