The Montanina Castle dating back to 1117, was conquered by the Florentines in 1298.
Given its strategic position, it was important for the control of the ancient pass road of the two neighboring valleys and of the ridge route.
Owned by the Tarlati di Pietramala, it was sold in 1384 as a partnership to the Florentine Republic. Having lost its strategic importance, it was abandoned in 1516.
