The Roman Catholic Imperial Cathedral of St. Bartholomew (officially St. Bartholomew's Cathedral in Frankfurt am Main, or simply Frankfurt Cathedral[1]) in Frankfurt am Main, the largest religious building in the city, is the former election and coronation church of the Holy Roman Emperors and, as such, a significant architectural monument of imperial history. It was considered a symbol of national unity, especially in the 19th century. The cathedral was a collegiate church from 852 to 1803, but never a cathedral.

The Imperial Cathedral of St. Bartholomew is the former elective and coronation church of the Holy Roman Emperors and, as such, a significant architectural monument in the history of the Empire. It was considered a symbol of national unity, especially in the 19th century.

The present cathedral is the fourth church on the same site. Previous buildings excavated since the late 19th century can be traced back to the 7th century.

Construction of the present Gothic cathedral began in 1239. Only after the cathedral fire of 1867 was the tower—still architecturally unique—completed according to surviving medieval plans by 1878.
