Bonenburg is rich in history. In addition to the house, there were many outbuildings that have now disappeared in the area.

The house and the estate bear the name of official Van Boinenburg. He had the original house built in the 17th century. Around 1850 the house was sold to an Amsterdam merchant, Martinus van Regteren Altena. He had the house extensively renovated and embellished. It then took on its current appearance. He also had the park forest created. It was given a landscape style, with winding paths and beautiful vistas. In 1954, the Van Regteren Altena family transferred the estate to Geldersch Landschap. The last major renovation of the house was 1992.
