It is a street that has medieval origins which constitutes a road axis born in the early stages of the foundation of the linear Este city. Among the most significant monuments that overlook it is the Leuti tower. The importance of the streets was much greater throughout the medieval period of formation of the city structure until the devolution of Ferrara to the Papal State, and until almost the seventeenth century it maintained its original layout.

The arches that characterize it date above all to the 13th and 14th centuries, but its almost straight layout dates back to the most ancient urban development that ran along the ancient course of the Po, before it deviated in 1152.

The elevated walkways were built by the owners of the river warehouses to avoid being robbed at closing in the evening and to be able to pass from the warehouses to the houses in safety.

Not too long ago it was also known as the street of prostitutes and some popular sayings still refer to it.
