The Goldgrube is a 500-meter-high hilltop located about two kilometers northeast of the town of Oberursel. Its name goes back to the 18th century, when mining was resumed at the hilltop. Before that, the hilltop was called "Hangelstein."
The hilltop consists of Taunus quartzite, which is interspersed with quartz veins. The "Goldgrube" rock formation has been protected as a geological natural monument since 1936. The former experimental mine is located in the mountain. Today, access is barred and the mine serves as a wintering place for bats.

On the mountain there are ring walls that were built there by the Celts. The Celtic settlement on the gold mine is one of the largest settlements in Europe, the Heidetränk oppidum, which also extends to the southwestern valley flank of the Urselbach. The former gold mine of the same name is located in the mountain.
