After the 1755 Earthquake, the Marquis of Pombal created a public walkway in the area occupied by the lower part of Avenida da Liberdade and Praça dos Restauradores. Despite the name, it was surrounded by walls and gates where only members of high society could pass.

The Avenida da Liberdade (1882) is in the most luxurious part of the city and forms the Lisbon equivalent of the Parisian Champs Élysées: banks, luxury hotels, boutiques, plus café kiosks in the shade of the trees. Very pleasant.

The development of the 90-meter-wide and 1,100-meter-long avenue, built in the Wilhelminian and Art Nouveau styles, initially had a rather provincial character due to Portugal's political and economic crisis around 1900. The monument to Rosa Araújo was erected here in 1936.

In recent decades, numerous older, including valuable, buildings have been demolished in the wake of the economic boom and replaced by new financial institutions and hotels. This also included the formerly picturesque trams, which were replaced by a Lisbon Metro line opened in 1959.
