Here around the war memorial to the plane crash in 1943 are Averbode forest and heath with old beech and oak forests, wet and dry meadows, moors and ponds. Only a few reminders of the crash, nature has recaptured the area.
Today, the forest and heath are retreats for rare animal and plant species. If you are very quiet and do your rounds early, you might see a great egret fishing between prickly broom or cinquefoil in the moor. Or you might spot a Phegea Butterfly, a Blue-winged Grasshopper, or the rare Marsh Grasshopper.

On August 17, 1943, a B-17 Flying Fortress exploded over the Weefberg at Averbode.
Location of the memorial:
The sign with further information about the explosion of the aircraft can be found between nodes 144 and 384 of the hiking trail network.
Hikers can contact the visitor center Huize Ernest Claes, Ernest Claestraat 152, 3271 Zichem. (Map indicates the approximate location).
On the Weefberg, close to the memorial, there is a wooden bench from Natuurpunt.
From this place one has a beautiful view of the surroundings.
