Lake Castérau is located on the edge of the road to Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle. It is one of the six lakes of Ayous. Located at the foot of the Castérau peak (2,227 meters above sea level), the lake is also on a beautiful open platform offering a breathtaking view of the Midi d'Ossau peak.

I've heard the story that the Pic du Midi d'Ossau is also called Jean-Pierre, in reference to the two prominent peaks. Jean and Pierre are said to be two conflicted brothers who have fallen out.

You pass Lac Casterau if you come from Refuge Ayous and hike the variant over Lac Bersau in the direction of Refuge Pombie. This is a very nice alternative to the GR10 on the HRP.
