Cemeteries always touch us because they address the inevitable: no matter how different people were during their lifetime - in the end, everyone is the same. This is especially true when the graves erase individuality, as is the case with this burial site with 170 graves of "landlopers" who had to do work here - often involuntarily.

What remains is not the biography of the individual, just his number and the result of his work - the cultural landscape of the Wortel colony.

The cemetery with 170 graves is a reminder of those who - mostly involuntarily - created the magnificent domain with hard work. They lived, like a number, on the edge of society.
For us, this is a conscious tradition to visit the vagabonds of yesteryear during the Christmas period (alternating Merksplas - Wortel).

Quite a confrontational location.
The White Crosses are silent witnesses to the vagabond past.
The vagabonds were given a number when they arrived in the Colony. On many white crosses in the vagabond cemetery there are lead plaques with only a number, no name.
In the meantime, several crosses have also been given names.
