Friedrich Gottlob Keller, born here in Hainichen on June 27, 1816, developed the process of papermaking using groundwood in the 19th century, which is still used today, and thus laid the foundation for the industrial mass production of cheap paper. Heavily in debt, Keller had to sell his patent; industrial exploitation was carried out by others. Keller's achievements were only recognized late. He finally died highly honored on September 8, 1895 in Krippen (Saxon Switzerland), where you can also follow in his footsteps.

The romantic fountain, adorned with lush plantings, bronze relief panels, and a bust of Keller, was ceremonially inaugurated on October 18, 1908. In 1943, due to wartime metal requisitions, the bronze Keller herm and the two reliefs were melted down. However, since plaster casts had been made beforehand, these could be used as models for recasting the reliefs and for the bust of Keller, crafted from Freyburg shell limestone by Joachim Stenker from Hainichen. The fountain was rededicated after World War II on June 19, 1952.
