Across from the Kerpener Obermühle, “journeyman father” Adolph Kolping was born on December 8, 1813. His great-great-great-grandfather Gerhart Colpein drove the mill in the middle of the 17th century and was “Bach school hot”: In order to regulate the competition among the 25 millers along the Neffelbach and to secure the flour supply for the population, he was allowed to run the mills disturbed, punished - if necessary even with the help of soldiers from the Kerpen garrison. In 1930 the wooden water wheel was exchanged for one made of iron, 40 years later the grinding operation was stopped.

The "Oever müllen", first mentioned in the 15th century, is an important medieval monument in the Börde landscape. After it was rebuilt after fires and, thanks to modern additions such as a steam engine and electric motor, was in operation as a water mill until 1970, the three-winged farm complex with mill wheel now serves as a residence. Ancestors of Adolph Kolping, pioneer of the Catholic social movement, operated the mill. His birthplace is now a museum and, like the mill, can be visited.
